Several parish depictions chronicle appointed observers who attended gatherings and noted breaches of etiquette or custom. These figures are not understood to be officials in a civic sense, but were believed to preserve community standards through public awareness.
The severe attire and hat are consistent with garments worn during the late harvest months, when households gathered for judgement plays and recitations.
