Carved sentry figures are thought to have stood in family rooms during the cold months. Their rigid stance and ceremonial uniform imply a protective function, though no evidence confirms whether protection was symbolic or practical.
The brightly decorated evergreen behind the figure appears frequently in winter records and may have marked the beginning of the longest nights.
